MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND ISD – THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND SEXUAL DESIRE

Although separating psychological causes of ISD from physical ones is often difficult to do, current research does indicate that certain diseases have a direct impact on sexual interest and functioning.

Some of these diseases include renal (kidney) problems— especially those requiring dialysis—chronic alcohblism, cirrhosis and other liver diseases, and testicular cancers and prostate problems, which adversely affect testosterone production. Other illnesses and chronic medical conditions—such as some types of cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries—influence sexual responsiveness and functioning. This can lead to ISD because, unfortunately, when sexual response suffers, anxiety or depression increases, and desire often diminishes.

For instance, men with long-term diabetes may experience difficulty in getting or maintaining erections. If they also work from a relatively traditional sexual script—one that tells them that sex equals intercourse, and includes few acceptable sexual behaviors that can be engaged in without an erect penis—they may avoid sex, consciously or unconsciously blocking thoughts or emotions that might trigger sexual desire, leading to ISD and/or sexual avoidance.
